Thin-style inserts have become the choice of most hygienists
The 'pioneer' of the thin-style tip, as well as the manual tuning technique, is generally credited to Dr. Thomas Holbrook. A renowned practicing periodontist in Tampa, FL, Dr. Holbrook's efforts have paved the way for several well-known instrument companies in the design and manufacture their own brand of thin-style tips. Perhaps equally as important is the technique Dr Holbrook has developed which delivers 'better clinical results', with 'greater patient comfort'.
The thin-style tips permit far greater subgingival access than the typical bulky, cumbersome inserts commonly used for supragingival debridement. Getting into furcations is now possible with the 'right & left' configurations currently available in the thin-style design. Deep root planing is not only possible using ultrasonic technology, it is now becoming the "preferred method" of many clinicians due to unique benefits provided by ultrasonic activity within the enclosed area(s) of the periodontal pocket, and the availability of the inserts/tips to provide better subgingival acccess.
